disappointed in music

Remember sitting in your room, hanging out with your friends, and just putting on a *gasp* Record? I was thinking of all the time I used to spend at my buddy's house, just listening to records and playing games or talking or hanging out or throwing water bombs out the window.

I was on my way in this morning, listening to the radio while I was thinking about it, mostly because I heard Us & Them by Pink Floyd when it hit me. I changed the channel and it really hit home.

Does current music kinda suck? Where are the guitar solos? Where are the 5-8-12 minute songs that you could get lost in? I realized that you have 1st Verse, refrain, 2nd Verse, refrain, bridge(if you're lucky), refrain. THAT'S IT? What a fuckin gip! (or is it jip? I never know)

Is this just another sign that I'm getting old, or do you all agree that musicians were much more talented in their craft? Or are you all agreeing with me because you're getting old too? :)

  1. I don’t know if it’s that the music sucks, or if it’s a generational thing, but I know when I hear most music that’s been released lately, I get a strong “kids these days!” feeling. :)

And the word is “gyp”. The origins of the word aren’t clear, though some believe it’s short for “gypsy” and refers to the idea that gypsies are all thieves. But there isn’t direct evidence of the word coming from there, so most dictionaries will say it “might” be short for “gypsy”, rather than saying it definitely is.

(This message brought to you by your local English major and word geek. :) )

  2. I think I’m getting old. I used to love to lay on my bed, listening to music and staring at the album cover, imagining stories in my mind that fit the music. This is why I don’t like buying music on itunes. There’s no album cover.

  3. I agree 100%. Remember the term “album oriented rock?” Those days are gone. Radio stations suck too.

  4. It sounds like you need to listen to some power metal.

Put on some Manowar or Hammerfall. Or heck, Dream Theater would work too.

That’ll give you what you want. :-)

  5. Well, I’m definitely old, but that’s not the real point. Every generation thinks their music is the best. But you know what? I think some of the music of my younger years was great and some of it sucked. Just as in very generation before and after me. I’m not all that wild about guitar solos and I absolutely hate drum solos, so the music I might choose from a particular era might not be what someone else would choose. I like singer-songwriters of the ’70′s, I like dance music and funk, and I also like punk. In fact, in spite of my advanced geriatric status, my two most recent CD purchases were the new Green Day (Twenty First Century Breakdown) and a Billy Talent CD.

  6. I think the coolest thing is an example of what happened today. We went to pick up my daughter from camp, and she asked to pick a song from my wife’s ipod. What did she choose?

Private Idaho by the B52s :) Gotta pass along the good stuff. She doesn’t like Miley Cyrus, she’d rather listen to Queen :)

  7. Matt, it comes down to the record (CD) companies. They can’t sell a song longer than the average teenager’s attention span. Radio stations just won’t play them. Also longer songs mean less commercials for them.

And yes, we all are getting old….

  8. Mike, then why did it work when we were kids? Did we really have longer attention spans? :) Not me dude! ;)
