Movie Review: Atonement
Guys, good chick flick credit here
Just kidding, I had seen the trailers way back when, and in truth, I'll watch just about anything that Kiera Knightley is in, but even that aside, it was a fantastic movie. I've been a fan of James McEvoy for a while now, but I believe this is probably his best performance to date. He was great in Last King of Scotland, but he really outdid himself in this movie.
I won't give away anything, but listen carefully to the music and the sound effects, it will hit you at the end. The story is basically about something overseen, and misinterpreted and how the person tries to atone for their mistakes. Wonderful performance by the little girl who plays Briony, and Kiera is simply wonderful. Definitely take the time to watch this movie. Feel free to come back and post your comments after you see it, or if you've already seen it, let us know what you thought.
Movie Review: Run Fat Boy Run
Love. Commitment. Responsibility. There's nothing he can't run away from.
. . . a romantic comedy that affirms true love isn't a sprint, it's a marathon.
If you don't know who Simon Pegg is, watch the movie. He just played Scotty in the new Star Trek movie, and he was brilliant. He co-wrote this movie with Michael Ian Black - another funny guy. Directed by David Schwimmer (the dude from Friends and Band of Brothers), it's a wonderful movie about a guy who can't finish anything. Simon Pegg, Thandie Newton, and Hank Azaria are the main characters along with a wonderful little boy that plays Simon's son.
I think I liked it mostly because I can see a lot of me in how I don't do well finishing things, so this was nice
Plus it's about a loser who beats an a-hole, so that's always going to be a plus. That and I think Thandie Newton is hot as hell
And guys, this is a great movie to watch and get chick-flick credit
Movie Review: Balls of Fury
Okay, this is a total dude movie, full of stupid puns, kicks to the balls and a total loser as the main character. That being said, if you have HBO on demand, go ahead and watch it, it was funny as hell.
I won't rate movies with stars, just give you the kind of mood you need to be in to watch and enjoy it. With this one, yeah, you need to either be high, a guy, or a high guy. Not saying that other people won't enjoy it, just that high dudes will like it more
Review: Milk
Netflix blurb: Sean Penn (in an Oscar-winning role) stars in this fact-based drama about Harvey Milk, the openly gay activist and San Francisco politician who was murdered along with mayor George Moscone (Victor Garber) by disgruntled city employee Dan White (Josh Brolin, in an Oscar-nominated role) in 1978. Director Gus Van Sant's compelling biopic (nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award) co-stars Emile Hirsch, James Franco and Diego Luna.
First and foremost - wonderful performance by Sean Penn portraying a groundbreaking spirit in Harvey Milk. Just watching this movie will make you want to get out and do something about closeminded, scared people. James Franco, who has been pretty flat in most of the movies I've seen him in, was surprisingly good as Scott, Harvey's lover in the beginning of the movie. Diego Luna plays Jack, a guy you want to go away about 2 min after you meet him, so obviously he did a great job with his part.
I loved the movie because he took risks, and questioned the establishment, and bucked the system and did it until he won. He was inspired by the people he inspired and won a great victory. Killed untimely, but I'm not giving anything away, they say it pretty much in the first scene
Review: Stay
Netflix blurb: This racy thriller bends reality about five different ways when a psychologist's (Ewan McGregor) suicidal client starts making bizarre predictions that, to everyone's mounting consternation, begin to come true. Now, the shrink must race against the clock to save everything he loves before it disappears forever. Naomi Watts, Ryan Gosling, Bob Hoskins and Janeane Garofalo co-star in this suspenseful yarn directed by Marc Forster.
So what did I like? Well, Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling are two of my favorite actors and having them in the same movie was a big bonus. Naomi Watts is fairly good playing Naomi Watts - it might be that I haven't seen her enough, but tho she is a good actress, she's never thrilled me in anything I've seen. The supporting cast was great, especially Bob Hoskins. Nice little mind fucker at the end too. The thing that I liked the most, however, was the cinematography. Just Wow. The way they bleed into and out of scenes (no, that's not a hint) is spectacular. It all seemed to flow so easily and draw you in from the word go.
What didn't I like? I'm hard pressed to think of anything really. I didn't like that I knew there was going to be that twist at the end, but I was surprised I was wrong at what would happen. Pleasantly surprised because I can usually foil a plot line by the first 15 min or so, so this was cool. Not mindblowing Matrix revealing cool, but a nice solid, believable twist.
