Manifesto

From Wikipedia: A manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government.  It often is political in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.

So, what is this post about?  This is the first day of the rest of my life.  I am very good at starting things, but crappy at times at finishing them unless they are of great importance, or hold my interest strongly.  I have gone in a thousand different directions too many times, usually amounting in getting anywhere of importance.

Someone asked me once, “What are you passionate about?”  Family, friends, supporting said family and friends, and just generally trying to be happy.  I thought about it some more and thought about and discarded a lot of small things.  I’ve been a student of martial arts for the last 20 years or so, and I’ve always been fascinated by Japan, it’s culture, and it’s people.  That’s why I’m going to quit my job, sell everything, and move to Japan to teach english.

Yes, I’m kidding.

I saw a quote by George Burns that really spoke to me: I’d rather be a failure in something that I love than a success in something that I hate.

The hell with it, I’m quitting my job and moving to Japan.  Wait, oh yeah, I have a family 🙂  They like heat and a roof over their heads.  When I thought about what I’m passionate about, I really thought about it for a while and realized that my passion, the thing that really makes me excited and makes me feel good, is service.  The Samurai were always in service to the Emperor, the word Samurai means, To Serve.  They gave nothing but everything to every aspect of their lives, and that’s really what I want.

So, how to get started?  Well, how about with a Manifesto of my own.  So, what is my intention, what is my motive?  My goal is to find a way to take my skills, and put them to use for the greater good.  My intention is to take the skills I’m learning in teaching myself Ruby and Rails (web coding), and use them to benefit others.  No, I’m not going to spend all of my waking hours doing things for everyone else.  I am going to take my free time and apply it where I can to help.  I have a great job now in NYC, I’m talking about the time outside of that.  I’m on a bus for an hour each way on my commute, I want to spend that doing things that will help others.  I’m also not going to jeopardize my relationship with my family.  I’m a realist, I’m not giving up sleep, either.

I’m mostly talking about a change of mindset.  What do I want to do with the time I have on this planet?  I want to make a difference, I want to make a change that will help others, and in doing that, feel fulfillment for myself, that I was able to serve others and help people reach their goals and potential.
